Obama picked Joe Biden. Big surprise. What did surprise me is Biden’s relatively good record on quiltbag issues. According to Waymon Hudson at the Bilerico Report:
Biden scored a 78% from the HRC 2006 rankings on LGBT rights. I’ve gathered information on his votes and quotes about hate crimes legislation, employment discrimination, DADT, immigration equality and civil unions.
It’s worth scrumming through.
For me the Obama/Biden ticket is utterly uninspiring but at least neither of them is an idiot, and if I could vote I suppose I would vote for them because, hey, look at the alternative.
utterly uninspiring…>>no doubt.
The thing is, I don’t really want my politicians to be inspiring. I don’t trust it. I want a politician who is smart, articulate, and willing to acknowledge the necessity of compromise. All national level politicians are slimeballs. They have to be, because they have to get re-elected. Voters aren’t smart and discriminating. Voters are average and easily led/duped. Democracy is a pretty useless way to run a country–there just isn’t a better way. Sigh.
Biden knows McCain and can come out slugging. This will be necessary in the dirtiest campaign in history. I miss Hilary Clinton
I haven’t been inspired by a politician in a long time. The whole process is pretty depressing but as you say there just isn’t a better way. >>The main area of concern for me is the judicial branch, the Supreme Court can and probably will change dramatically in the next four years. I desperately want a democratic president to make those changes and not a republican.>>Let’s hope that is the case.
Yeah, …snooze. The questions is what will those not-so-smart and indiscriminating voters go for? Hopefully they’ll like Biden’s foreign policy competency, his working class roots, and his experience. And maybe Biden’s knowledge of McCain will help. McCain was certainly quick to jump all over Biden.>>I just hope Biden helps. The < HREF="http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-poll20-2008aug20,0,5506138.story" REL="nofollow">latest polls<> are showing Obama and McCain statistically tied.>>It’s looking like the economy is the thing voters are most concerned about, and Obama is ahead there.
barbara, yes, I think things will get dirty, though don’t they always? This time, though, we have race in the mix. I’m not looking forward to the coded subtext…>>rory, I’m with you on the judicial concerns. I do wish Clarence Thomas would get terminal hemorrhoids.>>jennifer, voters generally really only care about themselves and, as you point out, their major concern at the moment is money. They’ll vote for whoever makes the best-sounding promises to make them feel less poor. It’ll be interesting to see who McCain picks for his running mate in the light of that.
Since Hillary “dropped” out of the race (I feel she was pushed), I’ve been uninspired by the whole process. I agree with you, Nicola, that national level politicians are slimeballs.>>And I know Obama is running on this whole “hope” thing, but I see through it like a thin veil. >>I was really excited about Hillary.>I’m completely not excited about our current options.>>But hey. Look at the alternative.>.sigh.
I might have to break my ‘no tv news, ever’ rule and get TiVo to record Hillary’s Wednesday convention speech and Barack’s Thursday acceptance. I’m curious, in a relatively dispassionate way, how they’re going to play this. Also, I want to see for myself how childish the delegates get…
I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about this election. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on one’s point of view, I can vote in this country. When H Clinton lost out, I got feeling pretty disgusted. However, now that Joe B is in the mix I think I’m interested again. One thing I do know, if I don’t vote I definitely won’t have a say in the way things get managed. And something I’m confidant of, a vote for John M is a vote for same old-same old. So I’m in to taking a chance with Mr. O. He’s the only one so far using the “C” word- CHANGE. And while change may not be good, its gotta be better.>>duff
To me it’s a no-brainer. Hold your nose and vote for Obama.
