Suffolk police have a reputation for being witty. Here’s an article about their latest efforts to encourage sensible behaviour around Christmas:
Suffolk police launched the list in a poster campaign that they say is designed to “ensure you have a night to remember rather than a night to forget”.
It tells drinkers: “Things that are difficult to say when you’re drunk a) Innovative b) Preliminary c) Cinnamon”. It adds: “Things that are very difficult to say when you’re drunk a) Specificity b) Passive-aggressive disorder c) Transubstantiate.
It then presents a list of “things that are absolutely impossible to say when you’re drunk”, including: “Good evening officer, isn’t it lovely out tonight?”, “I’m not interested in fighting you” and “Where is the nearest toilet? I can’t possibly vomit in the street.”
Try saying ‘preliminary transubstantiation’ a few times. Drink some wine and try it again. Or, hey, don’t bother. In the interests of science I will test this theory for you. Stay tuned…
First off, this is pretty great. Cops– on your side? As it ought to be, bravo. Here in Gotham/New York the only thing the police tell us is– If You See Something, Say Something. Thanks, Big Brother, really comforting.>>Also, I'm pretty sure I'm too much of a geek & a drinker for some of these– Preliminary Transubstantiation is the sort of thing I'd start inappropriately singing about after a few.
In the interest of science, I’ll add the test group to two this evening.>>Where did you find that, Nicola? It’s fantastic! Cops with wit…who knew?
How about extraordinary order? Or supercilious slime? Why is it that people sound so funny when they’re drunk? Furthermore, if cops can use humor to defuse drunkeness, anybody can.
Okay, I can now report that it’s not a good test of legal (i.e. fit to drive) sobriety. I had 3 beers and had zero difficulty saying ‘cinnamon transubstantiation’. There again, I forgot it was meant to be ‘preliminary’ and not cinnamon, so, huh, perhaps I failed after all…
Yeah, perhaps not the best test, but I did want to add an “s” before every transubstantiation. This was after two large glasses of wine.>>.grin.>>Added some photos of the Maine Solstice blizzard plus some of today that was filled with .rain. of all things. .sigh. Our weather is all over the place.>>I’ve put extra on my < HREF="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kivarocket" REL="nofollow">flickr<> page, so I don’t clog < HREF="http://gallery.me.com/tennjd#100505" REL="nofollow"> A View of One’s Own<>.
Hey, Janine, your snow is seriously deeper than ours. And that one pic, the most recent, looks like a painting.
Unfortunately, we have about 2 inches left due to unusual amounts of heavy rain. I didn’t order this…can I return it? .wry grin.>>Glad you like the piccies.
I grew up getting drowned in Lake Effect snow; I miss it.
Yes, Janine nice photos. I like that first one of the wave caps a lot. >>And Karina has a couple of cool ones too. Wow, lots of snow. I like that spiderweb. Spiders in the snow?>>And nice to see Linda’s Christmas Day pix too.
I took those photos two days ago, when we walked for miles in the cold *wink* to get to the store, only to find my Canon was sold out. Many cars were stuck in the waist-high snow, that’s E pretending to push one around. >>I like the spiderweb flare, too. If someone can find a religious image on it, we could < HREF="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4034787.stm" REL="nofollow">sell it on eBay for $28,000 dollars.<>
Thanks for the compliments, everyone. This is serious fun.>>I’ll start looking for religious icons in every patch of tree bark I photograph. Perhaps I can get all my student loans paid off. heh>>I had a thought…would anyone here be interested in starting a community book club? Totally low-key, and another way we can have some fun and read new books. I’ve been thinking about getting a blog site or website together for it. Any takers?
Janine, me! I already offered to donate one <>ANWAGTHAP<>, but I want to know who to mail it first. Ah, hell… I’ll also contribute with copies of Kelley’s <>Dangerous Space<> and <>Solitaire<>. >>So, yeah, we should get this rolling. I like the idea of a website/blog for the book club, to keep track of who has what, plus reviews and whatever.
Sweet! Karina, check out < HREF="http://www.wetpaint.com" REL="nofollow"> Wetpaint<> and tell me what you think. I can’t find anything that allows for instant chat, but a Wiki page would allow all of us to update the page as we go.>>Any other suggestions? I’m willing to put in the front work to get the page set up and running…
Oh, I’m afraid of Wikis. Last summer, I worked on a school project based on Wiki and it was a total mess. >>What about a WordPress + < HREF="http://buddypress.org/" REL="nofollow">Buddypress<> combo? And then everyone who feels comfortable doing admin work can have admin access, the rest can update their own profiles and post to the blog. Hm, I haven’t thought much about this… Let’s scout the WordPress universe for bookish plugins! What say you, Janine? :-)
Yeah, the idea of Wikis is really awesome, but the more I browsed people’s pages, the less impressed I became.>>I agree with you, Karina. Let’s scour the intarwebs! .grin.
Book group wiki–or Buddypress–sounds fab. I am beaming with joy at the thought of not having to organise it. Yay!
