The Sci-Fi Channel will become Scyfy. (Via the Swivet. ) Apparently girls are afraid of ‘sci-fi’. Also, it’s easier to text ‘syfy’ than sci-fi. No, it’s not a joke.
I think I’m going to change my name to God: bigger market pull, and easier to fit on book covers.

I like calling it SF better anyway — which can stand for both “science fiction” & “speculative fiction” — have always hated the term “SciFi.” SyFy is even dorkier.I doubt that there will be a quality change with a change to “SyFy Original Movies.” Those movies <>always<> suck.Let's hope they can do as well with “Caprica” though as they've done, overall, with “Battlestar Galactica.”Nicola, I will buy & read your books even if you change your name to God.

Back in the old days at Clarion in 1974, we had a discussion about this. The consensus was in favor of SF. Harlan Ellison had a running feud with Forry Ackerman over the term, and Damon Knight said it should be pronounced “skiffy.” I didn’t like sci fi and I like syfy even less. But I don’t watch the channel much so it won’t affect my viewing habits. I also heard the move was made because they can trademark syfy.
From a marketing standpoint, in the US, God has been done to death. Now, this is not to say that it wouldn’t be a good idea for you to start your own religion. Look how L. Ron Hubbard spun that one!Just a few thoughts.

What it means is that it won’t be the science fiction channel much longer. And it will make money. And someone will come along and fill the vacated niche; and the cycle will begin again. Just like publishing.
