I don't care much for RC, but Cate Blanchett looks highly entertaining in this.
And BTW, after you and Dianne mentioned that old Robin Hood movie with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, I watched it via streaming on Netflix. Pretty grim ending imo.
Huh. I think I saw this when it was called Brave Heart.
Seriously? Robin Hood was a guerrilla fighter, people! I hate Hollywood.
Is everyone grumpy today? Let me send some general goodwill out into the world and hope it all feels better soon.
Sorry, just under-caffeinated. =)
Eh, no apology necessary! Go consume caffeine and baked goods :)
Cate Blanchett. Yum.
Hmm. This reminds me of college, when 'Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves' came out. Dr. Rock addressed our Western Civ I class and said that he was extremely disappointed in the film because it wasn't historically accurate. He was a bit vocal about it. I was 'like, Dude . . .' (hey, it was college, no, I wasn't stoned).
If something is purported to be historically accurate, I'll look for accuracy. If it's just Hollywood having fun, I won't. Fun can be just as good. I'm looking forward to the film :).
Yep. It's all about Known Properties. Robin Hood–like Cinderella or Arthur–has a v. high recognition factor. Viewers (and readers) gain vast satisfaction from retreads/revisions of old stories. Which leads to box-office yumminess.
Uh-oh, I feel a blog post coming on…
Good solid history is nice when you can get it, but Robin Hood and King Arthur and such have crossed into myth. I would suspect that myths have always changed to reflect the times of the tellers.
Looks like bloody good fun to me. And Cate Blancett oooof.
Mmm. Eye candy. Big battles, etc., etc. But why can't they give us something just a smidge newer? Imagine Stirling's Emberverse on the screen!
–P.
P, Stirling doesn't have high enough name recognition. Robin Hood=instant marketing, and because it's public property, you can use the name and the basic notion–good guy fights injustice! swords and ponies and arrows! forest! romance!–and throw away the rest. Punters (i.e. people like me) will still have (or believe they have) an idea of What It's About–enough to decide whether or not to go see it.
I gather the original plan was to shoot a script called NOTTINGHAM, in which Crowe would play a Sheriff who ends up allying with Hood.
But apparently somewhere along the way Crowe decided he wanted to be Hood. Or maybe they said, hey, if we're gonna shoot a 100 million dollar movie, we stand a better chance of getting our dough back if it's called Robin Fucking Hood. Regardless. I'm there on day one.
Yep, business is business and, yep, I'll be there too.
