From the New York Times:
DIM lighting. Rendezvous-friendly nooks. Muscled bartenders. Pulsating dance music. At first glance, it could be any Saturday night in any gay bar in New York.
But then you notice, off to one corner, Superman flirting with Green Lantern. And there, across the room, someone in the form-fitting outfit of Black Adam, Captain Marvel’s foe, determinedly working the floor. In fact, there seems to be an inordinate number of men here tonight who look as if they have all but jumped from the pages of a comic book. And in some way, they have…
Gay and lesbian superheroes are in. Some people are cynical about it–for good reason–some people like me are more in the “Girls in skimpy clothes! Kissing other girls! Awesome!” camp.
What do you think?
I admit that I'm kind of interested in reading the newly announced Batwoman ongoing series when it comes out. But I worry that it's all going to be about male fan service. :-\
A little of column A, a little of column B, & a lot of column C.
Brinstar, according to a reader over on my Facebook page, the comic is going to be in good hands–actual story, actual character, not just (just!) hot girl on girl action…
Since I'm writing a gay protag right now and my last book (came out in January) deals with experimenting with lesbian urges, I hope it all flies. I'm not into comic book reading, but I'm super excited to see lots of variety in our heroes and heroines.
ssas, in my experience, if you write well enough, anything flies. Write what burns to get out.
I'm all for boys kissing each other too; I don't care if they're superheroes or not. But a movie version of Perry Moore's “Hero” might bring a wan smile to my lips.
Only 'wan'?
I think the cynicism is well-supported. But count me in as a member of the kick-ass girls in skimpy outfits kissing other girls is great camp. And maybe they'll make a movie… (wistful sigh)
Robin
Well, “Hero” was pretty downbeat on the whole, I thought, so yes, only “wan.” A movie of David Levithan's “Boy Meets Boy,” on the other hand … maybe the boys in it could be rewritten as superheroes.
I wonder if there's an app, or maybe a Final Draft plug-in, for that?
