Our kerbs got breathed on last night by a frost giant from an alien dimension. Or something. The oregano and marjoram have wilted and collapsed in a heap of blight, and the thyme is showing signs of same. The basil, parsley, and sage look alright. The chives seem a wee bit pale.
What happened? No clue. Light, nutrients, water all A-OK. No big swings of temperature. So, in the absence of data, I’m going with the alien frost giant. But I’m open to other suggestions.
Wow. So sad looking! Very mysterious…
Jennifer, it's a puzzle. I'll leave them for today, just to see if some miracle occurs, but I'm guessing tomorrow there will be a little pyre…
Yikes! And they were doing so well. :( You might check with the manufacturer to see if this is something others have experienced.
I'd say Basil, Parsley, and Sage drew up a treaty and declared war on the others. Unfortunately Thyme's neautrality couldn't spare it from receiving collateral damage in the process.
War is hell.
Well, they look no better this morning–much worse, in fact. So there'll be herb-burning today, or maybe just composting…
Thats too bad, you had such a lovely jungle going. Are the others still in good health?
Does the nutrient mix use vegetal growth hormones? Some companies are experimenting with fast-growth hormones. The problem is that the majority of the plants grow like wildfire but then die off quickly, often without ever reaching maturity.
As for frost giants from alien planets, my neighborhood has apparently been relocated to Hoth. I just came in from walking the dogs through six inches of snow. Temp is a biting 5 degrees at 74% humidity. Brrr.
tranceptor, sage, parsley, basil, chives all fab. More on that tomorrow.
Jo, no idea about the hormones. I don't think so, though. I think it's all meant to be organic. Sorry about your temperatures.
It depends on the standards for “organic” – which I know absolutely nothing about. Do you know anyone else who has the same kerb setup to compare notes with?
It's a far cry from your setup, but a few years back, Wal-Mart was selling “organic” starter peat pots and soil with souped-up growth hormones. Since growth hormones are organic, they were getting away with it — until people noticed that 99% of the plants in the peat pots were dying off within weeks, and so quit buying them.
The weather's fine – I'm not minding it a bit because I don't have to go out in it except by choice :P.
