I loved Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Eagle of the Ninth. (I love all her books; great stuff.) I love sword-and-pony movies. I love mist-and-moors, sturm-und-drang, honour-and-country. Basically, this look so fabalicious I can hardly stand it. Starts February 11th.
Now I just have to persuade Kelley that this might make an appropriate Valentine’s Day outing…
I've got my fingers crossed–it looks like they dialed up the angsty Hollywood drama a bit…but they do seem to have tried for a modicum of historical accuracy, which I appreciate.
Looks like a great V-day film!
(Personally, I think they should do a mini-series following the Aquila family from Eagle of the Ninth all the way to Shield Ring.)
Well, the dusted-with-flour tribe looks entirely like a H/wood invention but, hey, it should be fun!
I am assuming there will be lots of red blood. Blood red is a Valentine color. The heart that pumps the red blood is a Valentines' Day symbol. How could Kelley possibly object?
hey, it's ultimately a love story: a boy and his eagle. I say go for it.
Gaaargh!! It only seems to be playing in the suburbs!
Weird. If we can get it in Pueblo, you should be able to get it anywhere :P. My 17 yr old pseudo brother/child I raised who isn't mine and I are going to see it next week :).
Jo, jealous now…
Having just come back from seeing The Eagle, I must report that I am really not sure it's worth it. They really mess with the relationship between Marcus & Esca, which is the core of the book. Not to mention the dusted-with-flour Picts. Marcus is an _idiot_ throughout, as well as a jerk. Esca is a character with almost no convincing motivation. Very little of the plot is believable.
Of course, I read and reread this book so obsessively when I was younger probably no movie of it would have made me happy.
There is beautiful landscape photography of the Highlands, though.
Tell Kelley _my_ partner went to see it with me, and is now promising to read the book.
Sue, good for Kelley! But bummer about the film :(
… but more positively, these reviews might encourage you (see http://wp.me/p42Yg-1uZ )which is one post at http://www.rosemarysutcliff.com, a blog I write and compile about and for a wonderful novelist and children's writer who was also a relative.
Anthony, oh, I'm going to go see it anyway. I love Sutcliff's work. I've loved it for forty years.
Please post a review after you see it!
Sue, yes–though Hild is coming to a critical point, so I can't say when that'll be.
