Last night Kelley and I had a lovely intercontinental chat via Skype with Jonathan Strahan and Gary Wolfe, in Seattle, Perth, and Chicago respectively. It’s the kind of conversation that would have suited a late night in a hotel bar: Hild, historicity, genre, reading stance and more from four people who love to read and think.
The unedited podcast is up. There’s about an hour. Enjoy.

A really informative interview!
Have you already written the trilogy from beginning to end in early draft form or do you just have extensive notes for books two and three so far?
I like what you said at the end about time travelling back to where you grew up in Yorkshire before the modern landscape was mapped over it. I sometimes wonder about what Sheffield looked like before the steel mills landed in its many valleys. I think the part I live in was mainly farmland before the council estate was built.
It’s interesting to learn about you being inspired by industry insider brochures in that they introduced you to a curious subculture you never knew about. Some of the most left field of ideas can come from the real world, I guess. I should really make notes about what gets me writing.
I’ll definitely be checking out Kelley’s Solitaire!
Solitaire is a great book. The central section, particularly, is a tour de force (the New York Times Book Review thought so too).
No, I don't have a draft of all three books. I just know where I'm going!
