A few months ago I was interviewed for the Writing Excuses podcast:
In this episode we discuss how to faithfully represent people with physical disabilities through the characters we create. Our guest, Nicola Griffith, walks us through the process of rigorously imagining how the world might look to someone with a particular disability.
It’s about 15 minutes long. You can listen at the link, subscribe to the podcast via Apple Podcasts, or Android, or listen here:
Thanks to Piper, Dan, Tempest, and Alex.
Love the gentle pushback when Dan(?) suggested asking random disabled people.
For a possible disability resource there was http://www.Diversifya.com, which in spite of the YA focus did have a lot of people (me included) talking about their experience of disability from the inside. It’s defunct now, but the Wayback Machine has it archived at: https://web.archive.org/web/20190208211813/http://www.diversifya.com/category/diversifya/ It covers all sorts of diversity, not just disability, but there’s a handy sidebar of topics to let you access the relevant ones.
DavidG: Thanks for that. I’ve just listened to the podcast and realised I was supposed to find resources about disability and sex/sexuality (but forgot). Does the link you’ve shared cover that?
Yes, lots of individual interviews. People with various disabilities, people with different orientations, people with different ethnicities. Actually, probably simplest to copy the sidebar of topics:
