The Spear preorder giveaway campaign has just launched, so if you have preordered the book—
in any format or hardcover only, but from any US or Canadian retailer—you can own one of these splendid enamel pins designed for Spear by Forensics and Flowers.
All you have to do is give your name and contact info and upload a copy of your preorder receipt to get this splendid pin sent to you directly in the mail. Sadly this offer only applies to residents of the US and Canada—though it also excludes residents of Quebec. (I have no idea why, but these are the publisher’s rules, not mine.)
And it is splendid (I talk more here about what makes it special). I’m not usually a pin person but I’ve been wearing this one on my jacket lapel (and have had many compliments).
You can preorder the book anywhere books are sold (though the UK receipt won’t be eligible for this offer):
IndieBound | Amazon.com | Bookshop.org | Barnes & Noble | Apple | Amazon.co.uk
Or see this enormous list of independent booksellers in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland (but, again, see the eligibility rules above).
Then go get your pin!

This is tremendously cool. Tracking down my receipt now! Thanks, Nicola!
Hi Nicola. I used the form in the “go get your pen” link.
The form says, “You must order a new Hardcover edition of Spear by Nicola Griffith (the Book) to take advantage of this Offer.”
But you say, in the post above, that the preordered book can be “in any format.” I have already preordered an ebook.
I uploaded my receipt in hopes that “in any format” will prevail.
Ooof, my mistake. I should have read the rules ore closely. I’ll fix it—and I hope you prevail!
I’m in Australia so I’m not eligible for a pin ☹️ but I am of course still pre-ordering – cannot wait to read this book cos I know it will be brilliant!
Hi Nicola, I just tried applying for the Spear pin, using the form on the promotion, but it says I cannot enter at this time. Also the offer seems limited to the USA and Canada.
As I ordered 3 copies, may I hope for more than one pin?
I’ve just edited the post to reflect the eligibility rules. I can’t tell from those rules whether or not you can get multiple pins—my buess would be no, but it’s just a guess. So that’s a question for the publisher.
Thanks for your reply.
Will you be signing books at your local bookseller again? Who is that in Seattle?
Yes. I’ll be signing books for Elliott Bay Book Company for a joint event with Seattle Pubic Library, and as always I’ll be signing hardcovers for readers to order directly from Phinney Books: https://nicolagriffith.com/2018/12/01/signed-personalised-books/
Thanks you, Ms. Griffith! Putting my order in today.
The pre-order special Pin page isn’t accepting Australia “at this time”. Will that change at some point? I hope I can get a Pin!
Sorry, I just saw the rules are specified differently from your original post, above.
