I hate to sound like a noob, but what makes an Indie book different from a non-indie book. At first I thought maybe Indie was the term for authors that self-publish their work, but I believe most of your work is published by someone or some business other than yourself. Indie musicians are usually artists that haven’t become enslaved by the evil influences of a recording label’s money and instead, sell boot leg copies of their work from the back seat of their car, which is often where they live when they aren’t couch surfing at the homes of various fans, family, and friends. Sometimes indie artist become financially successful (i.e., Ani Difranco) and earn fuck you levels of money that enable them to fight off the financial temptations of the evil corporate dragon, and serve as a role model for all the other starving artists that want to avoid bending over for The Man. But for some reason that analogy doesn’t seem to fit what I know about you and your history. So, can you explain what an Indie book is?
Congrats! Glad you’re enjoying the company!
Gregory, “indie” in the case of Indie Next case refers to the *booksellers*, not the writer or publisher. The American Booksellers Association is a trade org for 2,000 or more independent bookshops in the US—the kind of small store you find in your neighbourhood, or one of the large independents such as Elliott Bay Book Company and Powell’s here in the PNW—and specifically excluding places like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Costco, Target, Walmart, etc. Every month they choose of list of new titles their members (the independent booksellers) are excited about.
